Chapter 4:

The next few hours are mostly uneventful. I ate my apple, so I'd have to get more food later. I reached the temple as well and settled in. And need I say, it was a lot larger on the inside than the outside. The lower level was at least 30 square feet, and almost everything was covered in soft moss. It made the place a lot cooler, and I used a heap of the stuff to make a sort of mattress. Along the right wall was a tall flight of stairs that stretched all the way to the first floors ceiling, which then lead to the level above. I chose to stay away from that area due to a bright, warm glow shining from above.

All throughout the day, there were three cannon blasts, some paired with a blood-curdling scream of agony. To try to adjust to my new weapon and to get more food, I went hunting as well. All I got, though, were two small pieces of pork...hurray. Well, it is kind of hard to hunt with just one arrow.  Just as the sun was ready to set, I went out one last time, hoping to get a little more than what I had. The sun was skimming the edge of the horizon when I decided to just give up...until I came across a big...fat...cow. And I'm not just talking fat, I'm talking fat fat. I knew just by looking I could get at least five steaks from that thing! My mouth started watering just at the thought.

Silently, I took the arrow out of the quiver that I attached to my belt and loaded my bow. I pull back on the string and aim my projectile. Aim for the heart... As I'm about to release, I hear a faint rustling from the bushes. The rustling caused the bovine to flee from my range. Notchdammit! Then it hit me: What made that noise? I heard the sounds again and whipped my head around looking for the source. By that time the sun was almost gone from the sky and it was hard to see. Every couple seconds, a round of rustles would emerge from the shrubbery, each one making me more nervous as they continued. The last wave of sounds ended directly behind me. Then they stopped. I knew that something, that someone was making those sounds. I carefully turned around, squinting into the greenery to try and spot the source of my ever-growing nerves. That's when I noticed the blue glint of a sword. A diamond sword.

I ran. That was my first instinct. Run. Get to safety. Don't stop. Run. By the way that I had taken off, I knew the person was chasing me. I didn't care. All I cared about was getting back to the temple. Keep going. Go faster. I raced into the temple's entrance, franticly looking for a place to hide. I looked all over, not finding a decent place, then my eyes fell to the stairs. Go up the stairs. It doesn't matter what's up there. Just go! I listened to my thoughts and started up the long stairway. Up and up I went, not stopping to catch my breath. My legs were burning, my sides ached, my lungs were trying to gasp for air. But that didn't stop me. I kept going, up and up. As soon as I reached the top, I saw a sight that made me want to sprint back down those stairs.

It was a fairly large room like the first one, but this one was slightly smaller and less mossy. IN one of the walls was a giant gaping hole that was crumbling around the edges, looking like it had been there for ages. Centered in the room...was a massive pit of fire. Combined with my immense sprinting and the enormous flames, the room felt like an oven in the middle of a volcano. I wanted to turn back, but by the way the person's shadow looked, he was already halfway up, his shoes clacking against the stone stairs.

Clack clack clack...

I ran towards the gaping hole in the wall, hoping I could jump out to escape. I looked below to the ground and realized I was at least 90 feet off the ground, a fall I knew I wouldn't be able to survive. Suddenly, a wave of intense dizziness washed throughout my whole body. My breathing started to become more labored, and I felt as if I was loosing weight every second. I went to reach for my snowy white hair. It was much shorter than usual, up to my shoulders instead of down to my abdomen. I lifted my pale, blue hands up to my eye level. Large drops of water were dripping from each fingertip. All those signs made me know what was happening to me: I was melting. The sounds of the person echoed off the walls, and were getting closer and closer.

Clack clack clack...

With no means of escape, I went over to the closest corner I could find and curled up into a ball-like position, accepting my fate. This is it. This is how it will end. This person is going to kill me, just like Martyn killed Teep. Heartless. No emotion. No remorse. I tucked my head into my arms, just hoping that it would be quick and painless. The clacking sound had died down, so I guessed he was up the stairs. The sound of a sword hitting the floor made me confused. How is he going to kill me without his weapon? He'll probably just choke me. I don't care anymore. The clacking noise started again, only this time it was slower and approaching towards me. Then they stopped, seemingly in front of me.

"Kutey?" I heard the voice ask. I know that voice... I slowly lifted my head to confirm the person. Grey boots, brown pants, leather belt, a maroon and gold jacket with a white and blue striped shirt, messy brown hair, deep blue eyes... "Xephos!" I practically whispered it, but I managed to say it with some excitement. I could feel I was melting fast. Xephos kneeled down next to me and analyzed my situation. "Wha-what happened to you?" I wanted to respond, but I could barely even take normal breaths. All I managed to mutter out was, "Hot...too...hot...need...cold..."

I felt myself loosing consciousness, the world began to get fuzzy and dark, and my body felt thick and heavy. I closed my eyes, my mind slipping away from the living. I felt myself being lifted by sturdy yet lanky arms, and cool wind blew through the little hair I had left. The next thing I knew, I was in a pile of what felt like snow. It felt wonderful and soothing against my skin. I felt my strength returning, my mind was returning, and my breathing was once again regular. I took a deep, long breath and sat up, looking at my hands again. There was no more water dripping from them. I checked my hair; it was back to its original length.

"Feel better?" I heard Xephos ask. I turned to see him sitting on his knees next to me, his eyes filled with worry. He had saved me. Somehow I felt he had done this sort of thing before, but I guess that will be for another time. I had heard that Xephos and Honeydew were heroes, and I guess this moment proved it. I lunged at him, but it wasn't to attack him. Instead, I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling myself in close, and gave him a thankful hug.
I promised a long chapter, and I believe I delivered. :) I'll try and stay as consistent as possible, depending on my schedule these next few weeks. School sucks balls.

Aww? I almost want to say it, but in the situation of the survival games it doesn't feel quite right...
