The Little Owl Lady
Chapter 3: Air People Stuff

A young woman was sprinting and leaping from tree to tree. Her long blonde hair flew behind her as she ran; her sapphire blue eyes sparkling with excitement and wonder. She wore a plain blue shirt with a brown leather strap and belt with silver buckles wrapped around her body. Her pants were simple and grey, there were brown fingerless gloves on her hands, and on her feet were brown leather boots.

She continued to speedily maneuver her way through the trees and vines, never slowing down once. She didn't stop moving until she reached an old, long tree trunk laying on the Jungle floor. She crept behind the trunk and crouched down, taking a peek at what was on the other side.

Before the woman could do anything, loud panting noises could be heard behind her. She turned her head to see a black cat running towards her, completely out of breath.

He trudged next to her, then plopped down on the ground. "You really couldn't have waited for me, Lomadia?" he asked, speaking in a Scottish accent.

Lomadia giggled sheepishly. "Sorry, Nilesy," she apologized, stroking his silky fur. "I guess I was too excited."

"Oh yeah, too excited to reach some random location that you told me about last minute before taking off, leaving me in the dust..." Nilesy stood up, rolling his forest green eyes.

"Oh right, I didn't tell you what that was about..." Lomadia replied, rubbing the back of her neck in embarrassment.

She motioned for Nilesy to look over the tree trunk, which he agreed to, placing his front paws on the top of the trunk and lifting his head up.

Before him was the wreckage of a giant airship, it's sails ripped and tattered and the wood now rotten and covered with moss and overgrowth. It was angled crookedly, making it look less stable than it already was. The whole thing let off a mysterious and eerie vibe.

Nilesy shuddered at the sight, while Lomadia looked on at it in amazement. "Isn't it just fantastic?" she asked.

Nilesy nodded shakily, slowly backing away. "Y-yeah sure, it's g-g-great...but maybe we should go back now..."

Lomadia grabbed his long, skinny tail before he could escape. "You're not getting cold paws now, are you?" she teased.

The cat immediately grew defensive, arching his back a bit. "What?! No way! I'm not afraid of anything!"

"Uh-huh, sure..." the young woman replied sarcastically, grabbing a leather bag from an opening in the trunk and climbing over it.

Nilesy tailed behind her, his confidence quickly fading as they neared the creepy ship. "Well actually," he whispered out, being careful not to disturb anything g nearby, "it's not that I'm scared or anything! It's just...I've, uh...got a hairball! Yeah, I've been hacking at it all day, see!" He then proceeded to pretend to hack, only it came out as heavy wheezes.

Lomadia paid no attention to her frightened friend as she reached the airship. She moved towards a giant hole in the wood, large enough for her to climb through.

She turned towards Nilesy and kneaded down to his level. "Okay, I'm gonna go in. If you really don't want to go in with me, you can always stay out here and maybe watch for pumas."

Nilesy smiled at his friend as she began climbing in. "Yeah, you can go," he replied, facing the Jungle in front of him. "I'll stay here and...WAIT WHAT?!?!? PUMAS?!?!?" he yelped, realizing what he just agreed to. "LOMADIA!!!!!"

He leaped through the hole, wrapping all four of his legs around Lomadia's leg tightly. Lomadia chuckled and pulled him off of her, holding him up to eye level.

"Oh, Nilesy," she laughed, placing him down on the floor.

Nilesy rubbed up against her leg nervously. "Hey Lomadia...do you really think there are pumas around here?" he asked.

"Nilesy, don't be such a scaredy-cat!" Lomadia replied, shaking off his comment.

Nilesy growled softly. "I'm not a scaredy-cat..."

Little did they know a dark shadow was watching them not too far away with piercing yellow eyes...

----~~~~----~~~~----

Lomadia walked silently through the dusty airship, pushing vines that hung from the ceiling out of her face. Nilesy followed close behind, muttering to himself.

"It's okay, Nilesy...this is supposed to be great...this is really fun...excitement, adventure, danger...lurking...around...every corn-" unknown to him, he had backed up into a pile of bones, knocking most of them down and breaking the thick silence that had formed.

He yelped loudly and jumped up onto Lomadia, knocking her to the ground from the sudden force.

She held her shaking friend close to comfort him. "You okay, Nilesy?" she asked worriedly. He nodded, still shaking uncontrollably.

"Y-y-yeah, I'll b-be f-f-fine; d-don't worry..." he replied, trying hard to calm down.

Lomadia stroked him for a while before noticing something above her head. There was an opening in the ceiling, leading to what looked like another room.

Being sure Nilesy was feeling better, she put him down and grabbed onto a vine hanging down from the upper room. When she reached the top, she reached her arms down through the hole so she could grab Nilesy as he jumped up towards her.

She placed him down as she looked around the room. It was pretty basic; there was a rotted-out table laying on the floor with a few chairs strewn about, and all the walls were made of glass. Assorted boxes and tarps littered the room as well, and a broken chandelier lay in the back corner.

Nilesy retreated towards one of the glass walls in fright as Lomadia started rummaging through all of the old objects.

"Um, Lomadia..." he said hesitantly, trying to grab her attention and failing.

She pulled out two items from the rubble, a knitted owl hat and a fork. "Look, Nilesy!" she called out. She then placed the hat on her head and admired her reflection in the glass.

"I really like this hat..." she mused. She then looked at the fork in confusion. "Not sure what this is though...maybe Turps can figure it out!" She stuffed the fork into her bag for future use.

Just then, a growling sound could be heard. Becoming even more terrified, Nilesy continued to try and get Lomadia to listen to him.

"What was that?! Did you hear something, Lomadia?" he questioned frantically.

Still not paying attention, Lomadia picked up a pipe and studied it closely. "I wonder what this is..." she pondered.

"Lomadia...!" Nilesy yelled through clenched teeth, now feeling as though they were being watched. As he did this, a large black shape appeared behind him from the other side of the glass, it's yellow eyes focused all on him.

Lomadia rolled her eyes, facing her back towards the cat as she explored the room. "Nilesy, will you relax? Nothing is going to happen!"

While she was talking, Nilesy slowly turned to look behind him, sensing a sudden presence. He looked just in time to see a giant puma lifting its massive paw, its claws large and sharp. Its mouth was formed into a snarl, showing off its big pointy teeth.

Nilesy screamed, "PUMA!!!!" and ran away from the glass as its paw smashed through the glass, almost hitting the small feline. Lomadia quickly turned her head to see the large cat enter the room as Nilesy sprinted away from it. Throwing the pipe into her bag, she picked up her friend and bolted as the puma pounced towards them, just missing them by a few inches.

The woman leaped down the hole and ran towards the exit, only for it to suddenly collapse in front of them, leaving only a giant pile of wood. The cornered duo turned behind them to find the puma now down from the room, its gaze directed right at them. It growled at them and crouched low, preparing to pounce again.

In a panic, Lomadia looked around wildly for a way to escape. Her eyes landed on a small porthole close to them. She quickly motioned for Nilesy to follow her as she ran to the window and squeezed through. Nilesy tried to follow her, but got stuck halfway through and was left hanging onto the edge of the porthole with his claws.

Lomadia went to grab the cat, but as she pulled him through, she saw the puma leap straight towards her, it's mouth open in a loud roar. In one quick moment, the woman jerked away from the window, falling to the ground and clutching Nilesy tightly, preparing for sharp claws to cut her skin.

But it never came.

Lomadia looked up slowly, only to find the puma's head sticking out of the porthole. And it was JUST the head. Everything else was stuck on the other side, leaving the large predator helpless and immobile. It snarled and growled as it tried to wriggle itself free, but to no avail.

Lomadia let out a sigh of relief, releasing Nilesy from her grip. He looked up at the puma and chuckled, sauntering up to it with confidence.

"Who's the predator now, huh?" he taunted the big cat. He hissed at it, who roared at him in return, sending the small feline running in fright back towards his friend.

Lomadia chuckled and patted his head. "Aw, Nilesy, you really are a scaredy-cat! Come on, let's go see Turps."

As they walked off, Nilesy yelled out, "I am NOT a SCAREDY-CAT!!!"

----~~~~----~~~~----

On a high brach above the canopy of the Jungle sat a seagull wearing a red fez. He was playing around with a telescope, humming a tune off-key while making it shrink and grow repeatedly. His fiddling and humming was cut off by Lomadia's call.

"Turps!!" she cried out, her and Nilesy's heads poking out of the leaves.

Turps took the telescope in his...um...wings, and looked at the two through it, only it was facing the wrong way, making them look incredibly small.

"WOAH!!! WOMAN OFF THE PORT BOW!!!" he yelled, pretending to be a pirate. "LOMADIA, HOW YA DOING, KID???" He took the telescope away from his eye to find Lomadia and Nilesy much closer to him than he thought. "Wow, that was fast," he commented, not getting that they had been right in front of him the whole time.

He pointed at Lomadia's owl hat. "Nice cap there," he complimented.

The young woman smiled and gave her bag to Turps. "Look at what we found today, Turps!" she exclaimed.

Turps grabbed the bag and peeked inside. "I see...more Air People stuff...let's see here..."

As he rummaged through the bag, a small owl flew towards them and perched itself on Lomadia's shoulder.

She scratched it a bit on the head. "Hello there, Mr. Owl!" she greeted. The owl hooted happily in reply just as the seagull pulled out the fork.

"Oh, would ya look at this!" he pronounced, holding the fork up. "This is a very special object, young lady..."

"What? What is it?" Lomadia asked, leaning in closer to Turps.

"It's...A DINGLE-HOPPER!!!" he shouted, holding the fork like a sword. Lomadia looked on in wonder, then confusion.

"What does it do?" she questioned.

"Simple; Air People use these little babies to do up their hair!" Turps explained, taking off his fez and putting the fork up to his head. "You hair twirl it like this...and then pull it a little like this...and...BOOM!!!" He twirled the fork in his feathers, then yanked it out with a strong tug, causing all the feathers on his head to poof out in all sorts of directions.

"Voilà!" he floofed his feathers a bit as he explained. "You now have yourself a stunning head of hair that Air People go nuts over!" Turps then handed the "dingle-hopper" to Lomadia, who gazed at it in excitement.

"But what about this one?" Nilesy asked, pawing the pipe out of the bag. Turps picked it up and looked at it carefully.

"Uh-huh...I can't believe...I haven't seen any of these in years...a snarfblat!"

Lomadia and Nilesy shared a look of puzzlement. "Uh...what's it do?" The black cat pondered Turps.

He leaned against a small branch as he explained. "This little baby dates back to the prehistoric days. Before the snarfblat, people would just stare at each other all day, which is SO boring! So, they invented the snarfblat, which makes very fine and lovely music! Allow me to demonstrate-"

But before Turps could blow into the pipe, Mr. Owl began hooting and flying around rapidly. The others watched for a few seconds, before Lomadia gasped in horror.

"Music?! Oh no, the concert! I completely forgot! Oh man, my father's gonna KILL me!!" she yelled, grabbing her belongings from the seagull.

"The concert was TODAY?!" Nilesy cried out in distress. "I KNEW I was forgetting something today!"

Lomadia beckoned her feline and owl friends towards her. "We have to go, guys. Thanks for your help, Turps!" she thanked as the other three sunk beneath the leaves.

"Anytime, sweetheart!" Turps replied, waving at them. "Anytime at all!"

As the young woman and her companions raced towards their home, they were unaware that two snakes, one blue and one orange, were watching them closely. Hissing and snickering to each other, they slithered away to their lair.
Third chapter's out! I'm actually having a lot of fun writing this; it doesn't feel like I'm forced to write a new chapter as quickly as possible. It's really quite nice :)
